The final scorebook line of the season for Columbus High reads: F6, 4-3, K. Blessed Trinity wins 2-1 on Evan Tieres' three-hit, one run performance on the mound for the Titans. Check out Saturday's print edition of the Ledger-Enquirer for all the details, photos and stats of the Blue Devils' run to the state final.
Blessed Trinity went down in order in the bottom of the sixth inning ... no runs, no hits, no errors, no hail marys.
Columbus threatened heavily in the sixth inning. Alex Fuller reached base. Andre Williams came in as a courtesy runner. He moved to second on Drew Konze's sacrifice bunt. He moved to third on a wild pitch (my official scoring). Columbus power hitter Merit Hicks came up and battled to a 3-2 count. He hit a sharp liner to right field that Jonathan Kolowich caught in front of his face and nailed Williams at home by five steps to end the inning on a double play.
The fifth inning was scoreless for each team. Columbus went down in order. Blessed Trinity got a single and proceeded to get two outs via fielders' choice. Columbus pitcher hung out Titan No. 1 hitter Tim Bondell to dry and Merit Hicks tossed the ball to Tyler Baughman for the third out. Columbus comes up in the top of the sixth down 2-1.
9:15 p.m. Jonathan Kolowich led off with a single for Blessed in the bottom of the fourth. He scored when Jimmy Coleman blooped a fly to right field. Dan Beck missed on the dive and Drew Konze's bouncing throw to the plate got between Chase Weems' legs, allowing Kolowich to score and Blessed to take a 2-1 lead heading into the fifth inning.
Columbus tied things up in the top of the fourth. Merit Hicks drilled a one-out triple to center and scored on Chase Weems' dribbler to second that was muffed by Shane Doyle. Dan Beck hit into a fielders choice and Adrian Thomas finished the inning by striking out. 1-1 in the middle of the fourth.
The Titans got a leadoff runner on first base but the Blue Devils' Elliott Ogawa showed some craftiness by picking off the runner. Ogawa settled down to strike out Tim Bondell and got Eric Maust to ground out to second. Come back for an update on Columbus' offensive set.
Blessed Trinity got on the board in the bottom of the second in the second game. The Titans loaded the bases with no outs. The Blue Devils turned a double play but a run scored. Elliott Ogawa struck out Matt Batteh to end the inning. Check back for an update of the Blue Devils' top of the third.
Game one over. Blessed Trinity Catholic 1, Columbus High School 0. The Blue Devil threatened a bit in the seventh but couldn't get a runner past first base. Game two, if Mother Nature permits, will start in about 45 minutes from Golden Park.
Still 1-0. Blessed Trinity went quiet as a church mouse in the top of the seventh inning. Well, if a church mouse were carrying an aluminum bat.
Blessed Trinity went quietly in the top of the sixth. Columbus went long but runless in the bottom of the sixth. Alex Fuller flew out deep to left center. James Kennebrew stung a grounder to short for the second out and Merit Hicks hit a long out to right center to end the inning. Blessed Trinity 1, Columbus High 0 ... one left.
Blessed Trinity finally gets a hit and also scored the game's first run. Bondell singles to left field and stole second. With two outs, Evan Tieles singled past a diving Tyler Baughman, driving in Bondell. The Blue Devils still haven't managed much against Maust. The Notre Dame signee struck out the first two before Dan Beck singled. He was stranded at first.
Not unlike a puppy on its first night home, Columbus went down quickly and quietly in the fifth. Blessed Trinity still up 1-0 after five.
Columbus staved off a Blessed Trinity rally. Derek Chriscoe walked with one out and reached second on Benton Yaun's single. Chriscoe reached third on Matt Betteh fielder's choice. Leadoff hitter Tim Bondell closed the inning with a grounder to second.
The Blue Devils, not unlike the skies above Golden Park, threatened weakly in the fourth. Merit Hicks and Chase Weems both struck out. Dan Beck lined a single up the middle. He advanced to second on a wild pitch but Adrian Thomas ended the inning with a pop fly to short. Still, 1-0 Blessed Trinity.
We have a run. Tim Bondell got Trinity's first hit, first stolen base and first run. Bondell scored on Evan Tieles two-out single to put Trinity up 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
Blessed Trinity went quietly in the top of the third inning (sorry for the delay). Alan Taylor leadoff the Columbus third with a roller to first for an out. Eathon Brubaker lined a double off the wall in left to create excitement. Alex Fuller followed with a looking strikeout and James Kennebrew hit back to the pitcher for the third out. Still scoreless after three ... and we're looking to avoid the rain.
It's warm, it's humid ... and there is little to report at this point. Columbus again created action but no runs in the bottom of the second. Dan Beck was robbed of a hit by the shortstop to start the inning. Adrian Thomas reached first after being hit by a pitch but was thrown out attempting to steal on the next pitch. Tyler Baughman closed the inning with a strikout. 0-0 after two ... but the fans are having a good time.
